PNG’s Parliament Speaker Job Pomat has informed the parliament today that after careful consultation with the chairman of the public accounts committee, the investigations of deaths related to the drug Propofol at Port Moresby General Hospital may not be within the jurisdiction of the public accounts committee.

Speaker Pomat made this announcement in response to the question raised by Abau District Member Dr. Puka Temu yesterday in Parliament to ensure public accounts committee is called immediately to investigate on the processes that PNG’s Covid National Control Center has followed to bring a medical drug called Propofol into the country after 4 out of 7 people who have been exposed to this drug died.

Mr. Pomat says he agreed that this is a serious matter concerning the welfare of Papua New Guineans and is saddened by deaths in hospitals that would have been avoided.

He encouraged those responsible to ensure that the investigations are completed in a timely manner so that appropriate corrective measures can be taken by the responsible authorities.

Speaker Pomat says the Public Accounts Committee is established under section under 216 of the constitution, the same provision and part 5 of the public finance management act that provides for the powers and functions of the public accounts committee.

He says its primary functions is to examine and report to the parliament on the PNG Public Accounts on the controls of transactions with or concerning public monies and properties of this country.

According to the speaker, recently the public accounts committee tabled a very comprehensive report on the 09th of September, 2020, on the department of health procurement of medicines.
