The sale of coffins has picked up since the increase of deaths due to the COVID-pandemic.

During the height of the surge, Lae businessman Simon Ottogoma from the FTC Coffin Haus at Kamkumung has been selling coffins at an average of 14 per week.

He confirms that other coffin makers are now charging between K800 and K1000 per coffin because the hardware shops have increase their prices on the 600cm by 900 cm by 9millimeters plywood.

But Mr Ottogoma says despite that, his shop was selling at K600 for the standard coffins, which include four carry handles and a glass frame for viewing.

He says he just recently ventured into the coffin business last November…and has grown to like it… describing the coffin-making industry as a “200 per cent profit’” business.
