May 15, 2019

Innovative Agro Industry PNG and partners have again achieved a milestone in the farming industry in PNG. The firm has been pioneering the modernization of commercial agriculture practices in PNG with the use of advanced Israeli farming technology and experience, and has delivered yet another first, reaching internationally recognized HACCP safety standards in the poultry industry with operations at Mount Fubilan in the Western Province.

HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, a preventative food safety system that takes stock of the hazards in food production. It is a preventative food safety system in which every step in the manufacture, storage and distribution of a food product is scientifically analyzed for microbiological, physical and chemical hazards. Papua New Guinea Certification Services (PNGCES), the National Certification Body under the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (NISIT) formally advised of its decision to grant HACCP Certification to Mount Fubilan Agro-Industries Limited Egg Farm and Production Facility in Tabubil, Western Province earlier this year.

Agribusiness firm Innovative Agro Industry PNG Ltd (IAI PNG Ltd) has been working in partnership with the people of Western Province and the Ok Tedi Development Foundation ( OTDF ) to deliver a commercial poultry project in Tabubil since May 2017. Construction on the poultry facility, which was developed to provide employment opportunities for mine affected villages in the Western Province, was concluded by February 2018.

Chief Executive Officer of Innovative Agro Industry PNG  Lior Crystal said “ Our team have been diligently working towards this important internationally recognized certification for Mount Fubilan. We are the first fresh produce commercial farm in PNG to be granted this certification with our Operation at Nine Mile Farm in the national capital last year. Meeting international standards in food safety is something we take very seriously to ensure Papua New Guinean produce is safe for both domestic consumption and international export, and our processes meet international standards.”

The total investment in the establishment of the Poultry Enterprise in Western Province is K7 million, of which operators IAI PNG Ltd invested 20% of the project amount, with the balance raised by Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF), representing associated mine villages and the Star Mountain Women’s Association (SMWA).

Mr Crystal said “ The project aims to form a foundation for modern commercial agriculture in Western Province and gaining HACCP certification is a key component to developing a modern farming industry in the province based on industry best practice. ”

The table egg and broiler production farm caters for the needs of the local market and supply eggs and live birds to local communities and commercial clients in the region has been operational since early May last year. All produce is sold locally in Tabubi and Kiunga.

Innovative Agro Industry PNG continues to work closely with communities throughout the country in developing commercial agriculture opportunities using modern technology and developing a local workforce in the agriculture industry.
